FAQs

Got Questions? We've Got Answers

Do you diagnose ADHD, dyslexia, or dyscalculia?

No. Kay Gibbs Tutoring does not diagnose ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, or any other learning difference.

We provide academic tutoring and learning-difference-informed support. That means we can help students work through schoolwork, skill gaps, test prep, study strategies, and confidence around learning, but formal diagnosis should come from the appropriate licensed professional or school-based evaluation team.

If your child already has an evaluation, IEP, 504 plan, or school notes, those can be helpful to bring to the consultation.

Yes, tutoring can often support the academic goals or concerns identified in an IEP, 504 plan, school evaluation, or teacher feedback.

We do not replace the school’s services or accommodations, but she can use that information to better understand how your child learns, where they may be struggling, and what kind of support may help them feel more confident. The goal is to work with the student in a way that respects their needs and gives them practical tools for learning.

If you have school paperwork or notes from teachers, you are welcome to share anything you feel is relevant during the consultation.

Yes. We work with adult learners who may have ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, test anxiety, past school struggles, or simply a long gap since they were last in school.

Adult learners often come in carrying frustration or embarrassment from previous academic experiences. Kay Gibbs Tutoring’s approach is respectful, practical, and focused on helping adults understand what they need now, whether they are preparing for the ASVAB, TEAS, college coursework, career training, or a personal goal.

Needing support as an adult does not mean you are behind. It means you are giving yourself a better way forward.

Yes. Math anxiety is one of the reasons many students and adult learners seek tutoring.

We help students slow down, identify where the confusion starts, and approach math in a way that feels more manageable. Sometimes the issue is a missing skill. Sometimes it is the way the concept was explained. Sometimes the student has had so many negative experiences with math that they expect to fail before they begin.

Tutoring can help rebuild confidence by focusing on clear explanations, practical strategies, and small wins that show the student they are capable of learning.

Bring anything that helps us understand the student’s current situation.

Helpful items may include:

  • Recent schoolwork or assignments
  • Tests, quizzes, or progress reports
  • Teacher notes or parent concerns
  • IEP, 504 plan, or school evaluation, if applicable
  • Information about previous tutoring or interventions
  • Notes about what has or has not worked before
  • Details about the student’s goals, schedule, and learning concerns

You do not need to have everything perfectly organized. The consultation is meant to help us understand what is going on and recommend the best next step.

That is more common than many parents realize.

When a student shuts down, it is usually a sign that something feels overwhelming, confusing, frustrating, or unsafe to keep trying. We look beyond the assignment itself to understand what may be causing the shutdown. It could be a missing skill, anxiety, fatigue, difficulty with instructions, trouble organizing steps, or years of feeling like they are “bad” at a subject.

Tutoring gives the student a calmer place to slow down, ask questions, and try a different approach. The goal is not to pressure the student through the work. The goal is to help them feel understood enough to begin again.
